Batman: Arkham City is a 2011 action-adventure video game developed by Rocksteady Studios and released by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 video game consoles, and Microsoft Windows. Based on the DC Comics superhero Batman, it is the sequel to the 2009 video game Batman: Arkham Asylum. It was released worldwide for consoles, beginning in North America on October 18, 2011, with a Microsoft Windows version following on November 22, 2011.

Arkham City was written by veteran Batman writer Paul Dini with Paul Crocker and Sefton Hill, and is based on the franchise's long-running comic book mythos. In the game's main storyline, Batman is incarcerated in Arkham City, a massive new super-prison enclosing the decaying urban slums of fictional Gotham City. He must uncover the secret behind Arkham's sinister "Protocol 10" while protecting inmates from the notorious criminals housed there. The game's leading characters are predominantly voiced by actors from the DC Animated Universe, with Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill reprising their roles as Batman and the Joker, respectively. The game is presented from the third-person perspective with a primary focus on Batman's combat abilities, stealth and detective skills, and gadgets that can be used in both combat and exploration. Arkham City expands Batman's arsenal of gadgets and combat attacks and offers a more open world structure, allowing the player to complete side missions away from the primary storyline.

The game received critical acclaim and was tied for the highest-rated video game of 2011 according to review aggregator Metacritic. It was the recipient of several awards including Game of the Year, Action game, Action Adventure game, Adventure game and best original music score. A Game of the Year edition was released on May 29, 2012 in North America, and was released on September 7, 2012 for the rest of the world. A Wii U version of the game was released in November 2012, and an OS X version was released in December 2012. A spin-off iOS game, Batman: Arkham City Lockdown, was released on December 7, 2011.

Arkham City is an open world[11] action-adventure game that incorporates elements of stealth and beat 'em up game tactics. Some gadgets obtained in the first game are present at the start of Arkham City, while others become available during play.[12] Most of these gadgets have improved or new capabilities; for example, the Cryptographic Sequencer, used for hacking security consoles, can also monitor shortwave radio channels,[13] while the line launcher can now be deployed as a tightrope or alter direction during flight.[14] Other equipment returning from the first game include: a remote-controlled batarang; Explosive Gel that can now be deployed in combat and detonated to knock down enemies;[15] and the grapnel gun, which can be used while gliding to facilitate transportation and in combat to disarm distant enemies.[15] New equipment in Batman's arsenal include: smoke bombs that disorient opponents and assist with stealth tactics; a Remote Electric Charge (REC) gun that can stun enemies and temporarily power motors;[15] Freeze Blast grenades that encase targets in ice and can be used within water to create makeshift platforms;[12] and the Disruptor, which can remotely disable guns and explosive mines.

The game incorporates more puzzle elements than its predecessor; the use of Batman's "Detective Mode", which highlights elements such as character status and clues on-screen, is used to perform forensic activities such as tracking the source of a sniper rifle round. The player has access to a criminal database which includes forensic puzzles, as well as a network for hacking communication frequencies.[16] However, Rocksteady's art director David Hego described the new detective mode as an "augmented reality mode", and game director Sefton Hill has also stated that although enemies and evidence can be seen more clearly, the navigational part is toned down as they found that some players completed Arkham Asylum using detective mode throughout almost the entire game.

Optional challenges from the Riddler to collect hidden items placed around the city are also present, but require additional effort to locate, such as interrogation of the villain's henchmen and the cunning use of gadgets to disable traps and barriers. After completing a select number of challenges, Batman must rescue a civilian hostage held in one of the Riddler's many death traps.

The player controls Batman through Arkham City to complete mission objectives. In addition to the primary mission, the game introduces secondary missions featuring key characters and their stories. The player can opt to move silently, avoiding inmates and other enemies using a combination of gadgets to sneak up on opponents to incapacitate them. Batman's gliding ability allows players to dive downward and pull themselves back up, enabling the player to traverse the city by air. At other times, the player can battle inmates using an improved version of the Freeflow combat system from Arkham Asylum, allowing for the ability to counter multiple blows simultaneously, catch hurled projectiles, launch aerial attacks, and administer a succession of consecutive strikes. Disputes between gangs allied to rival villains often spark turf wars, which complicate the player's ability to move about Arkham City.
